Tone Detector

It’s not just what you say — it’s how you say it. With the tone detector activated, Grammarly will identify the tone of messages to help your users be confident they sound the way they intend.

How it works

If you’re familiar with Grammarly’s tone detectoropen in new window in other Grammarly product offerings, the Grammarly Text Editor Plugin feature operates in much the same way.

The tone detector analyzes the provided text and provides up to 3 tones sorted by intensity. The most intense tone is shown beside the Grammarly button:

Clicking this button reveals the top tones detected (up to 3) as well as their intensity:

Tone detector with top 3 tones\: informative, formal, optimistic

Keep in mind the following:

  • Detection requires at least 150 characters (a few sentences) of English.
  • If multiple editors are present on the page, the tone detector reflects the active one only.
  • Your users can turn tone detection on or off anytime from the Grammarly button menu.
  • The exact list of detected tones (which includes dozens!) may evolve over time.

Configuration

To activate or deactivate the tone detector, use the toneDetector configuration option.

Tone suggestions

Grammarly may suggest specific tone improvements in the text. These suggestions are independent of whether or not the tone detector is on.

Tone suggestion from 'You never responded' to 'I didn't get your response'

You can try these out by visiting the Demo and exploring the “Delivery” category.
